 SUNY Purchase cites decrease in freshmen residents, increase in commuters

As incoming freshman Matthew Desanctis arrived at SUNY Purchase Saturday morning after a six-hour ride from Rochester with his father, he was well aware that life now holds fewer guarantees than it did for past students.
“It is almost given in our society that you need some sort of college degree to make a living,” Desanctis, who will be studying visual arts, said. “Hopefully it will be a bit better when I graduate but I’m not crossing my fingers.”

Around 11 percent of 2010 concessions will be permanent

The blow of deferred 2010 spending could still be dizzying for Harrison starting in 2012, but permanent savings from two pieces of the union concession package should help the town, at least to some extent, maintain fiscal balance going forward.

There may be an anti-Democratic candidate storm brewing in Westchester’s voting population this year, but that’s a battle for another day. On Tuesday, Sept. 14, a primary election is set to determine which of two Democratic State Assembly candidates will get the nod to try to unseat incumbent Robert Castelli, a Republican who won special election in February in the heavily Democratic 89th Assembly District.

Borrowed town-owned cart for private use

Mayor Joan Walsh (D) has found herself in a bit of a bunker after she borrowed a town-owned golf cart for private use last month. The mayor contends there was nothing controversial about her use of the vehicle, while others believe borrowing the cart was an ethical violation that broke Harrison’s employee policy.
